The Bible tells us God is fighting our battles, working all things together for our good, and making a way even when we don't see a way. And it says all will be well with the righteous.

But life has a way of eroding our faith, what with broken dreams, peer pressure and the challenges we face. The negative news we hear in the media also weakens our faith.

As for me, I know how it feels to have faith in God, only for it to diminish when dreams fail. And we can do bad things when that happens because it's at our weakest moments that the devil often succeeds in tempting us.

In 2008 when I was waiting to hear from some American colleges for instance, I stared at a beautiful starry sky, thinking the same God who made the heavens would take me to America.

But alas! None of the colleges accepted me. And the afternoon I read my last rejection letter, I became so depressed that I could have done anything to relieve the depression. Thank goodness I only watched a dirty clip.

There is an old story about Socrates that I like. It's about a young man who went to him and said excitedly, "Socrates, I've just heard some news about one of your friends!"

"Hold on a minute!" Socrates replied, "Before you tell me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say through three tests. The first is the test of Truthfulness. Have you made absolutely sure what you are about to tell me is true?"

After thinking for a moment, the young man said, "I heard the news from someone else, so I'm not 100% sure if it's true."

"The second is the test of Goodness," Socrates went on, "Is what you're about to tell me something good?"

"No, actually it's the opposite."

Socrates said, "So what you're going to tell me is neither true nor good?" Slightly embarrassed, the young man shrugged his shoulders.

But Socrates continued, "Hold on! You may still pass because there's one more test left - the test of Usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be of any use to me?"

"Probably not," the young man answered.

"Well," Socrates concluded, "If you are going to tell me something that's not true, good or useful, then why tell it to me at all?" The young man walked away feeling embarrassed.

That story makes me think that people could be spreading rumors about me. Some may believe what they say but as long as I'm walking with the Lord, I've nothing to fear.
