How I Beat the Odds

When I was in primary school, I wasn't that bright given the way I scored average marks in school. But because I had the determination of a bulldog, I read a lot to improve on my scores.

But my hard work wasn't reflected in school. During my Standard 8 year for instance, my marks were mostly in the 370s and 380s, hardly the kind that would take one to Starehe, a top high school here in Kenya.

It's like other people could see I wasn't bright because after KCPE results were released in December 2001, a man here in Kiserian told a friend of mine I wasn't the kind of boy to score high marks.

So I went to collect my KCPE results a day or two later, expecting to score my usual average marks. But wow! Joy overcame me when my headmaster handed me a result slip that showed I had scored 421 marks.

The marks took me to Starehe, something that surprised those who knew me, like Uncle Ndonga who lived with us in the '90s. I heard he was taken aback to hear I had made it to Starehe.

Looking back, I realize aiming high was what helped me get into Starehe. Imagine I wanted to top the country in KCPE exams even though I hadn't scored past 400 marks in my Standard 8 tests!

By the way, I still meet the man who told a friend of mine I wasn't the kind of boy to score high marks in KCPE exams. He walks with a rolling gait that makes him appear like he's kissing the earth with his feet.

My Kunoni Days

These were my schoolmates at Kunoni Educational Centre in a photo taken in 2001. For those who have known me for years, can you recognize me?

My immediate elder brother Paddy was the first one in my family to attend Kunoni after it admitted him in 1998 as a sponsored pupil due to his brilliance. And he sometimes regaled us with stories about the school.

His stories must be what made me want to join Kunoni because I pleaded with my parents to also take me there. They eventually did in my final Standard 7 term in the year 2000. But I first did an interview which I passed.

As a Kunoni pupil, I had to wear a tie, socks and black shoes - uniform I took some pride in, especially the tie which was a first for me. My other firsts were keeping a diary, learning computers and going for half-term breaks.

My Kunoni classmates, I must tell you, were from well-off families. They brought quality food to school, and some were dropped in the morning by their parents. One of them was Nicholas Onyancha.

The day before we began the consequential 2001 KCPE exams, I visited Onyancha with a few other classmates. His family treated us to juice and biscuits they kept in a cupboard.

Here at home where I lived with four brothers, we never had juice and biscuits in the cupboard. On the rare occasions when such delicacies were brought home, we gobbled them, hardly sparing a morsel for the next day.
