A Brother, a Friend, a Lighthouse

This is Symo, my kid brother, and I in 2003.

When we were growing up in the '90s, Symo and I did a lot of things together. We grazed cattle, harvested maize, prepared meals and exchanged banter about our experiences in school. About the only thing we didn't do together was watching movies in Kiserian Town.

You see, there was a time Symo knew of a fleapit in Kiserian that showed movies. He then formed a habit of going there on Sundays after church, using the money Mum gave him for buying tea to pay for his entrance to the fleapit.

The movies he watched captivated him given the way he coaxed me into joining him, something I declined to do. He therefore went alone until one Sunday when Dad found out he was spending his Sunday afternoons watching movies. He roundly criticized him.

Fortunately for Symo, we had a black-and-white TV that kept him entertained. His favorite shows were Sinbad, Robocop and Conan the Adventurer. He also liked another show whose main character was an unforgettable boy nicknamed TJ.

Later on when we were both in high school, he sent me a letter, urging me to work hard in my studies. The letter touched me. How I wish I had kept it!

Then in 2008 when he was in his final high school year, he implored me to visit him, adding that his classmates would treat me with awe and respect. His plea also touched me but I didn't pay him a visit.

Symo became more of a lighthouse for me as the years wore on, first by correcting me when I acted out of character and then by helping me acquire what I've needed to thrive as a blogger. Last year for instance, he gave me his Samsung Galaxy when I needed a better phone.

He has also given me positive feedback on the stories I share on this blog. Just a few weeks ago, he described a story I shared as "beautifully written and completely relatable" - the kind of feedback that inspires writers to keep writing.

Perhaps it's due to the way we are close and the way he has helped me that I feel bad when I think he could be having a problem, even though it's normal to have problems. May the Good Lord bless and keep him always.

Even though I'm yet to make it big, I'm glad I took up blogging as a profession. For one, it makes use of my computer, music, writing and public speaking talents. Then it connects me with people.

Given how I've grown to love blogging, I wouldn't choose another profession if I were given another life to live. Not even in a third one. Blogging just fits me to a T.

And how are my days as a blogger? Well, I do all I can to keep getting better. So I read, write and reflect. Oh, I also eat well, drink water, exercise, listen to music and pray.

Of course there are those occasions when I've to interact with people, go shopping, attend events and clean myself up. I'm human, after all.

All that I do provides grist for my blog. Something I see during a walk may provide ideas for a story and an insightful statement I come across in a book can become one of those quotes you see on my blog pop-up.

Yeah, that's how my days are as a blogger. And I will never change. So, if I may borrow the words of Benjamin Franklin, I will always do something worth blogging or blog something worth sharing.
