Finding the Voice Within

One Sunday afternoon in 2011, I had a rendezvous with two ladies and shared with them how I admired great leaders like Bill Clinton, Thomas Jefferson and John F. Kennedy.

I must have talked a lot about those leaders because one of the ladies, Ruth Wangire, brought to my attention that there was so much of those leaders in me and so little of me in me.

A few weeks or so later, I had another rendezvous with a former high school mate called Paul Byatta. Then on holiday from Harvard College, he also told me the same thing as Ruth Wangire.

It has been a while since I had another rendezvous with a perceptive friend. But I want to believe there is now less of others in me and more of me in me given the way I've worked hard to find my own voice. And the journey continues.

Here's me holding James Allen's As a Man Thinketh.

"As a Man Thinketh", as the title suggests, is a book about how thoughts shape health, character and circumstances. Allen borrowed its title from a verse in the Bible that says, "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he."

He said that strong, pure, and happy thoughts build up the body in vigour and grace, that a good character is the natural result of continued effort in rightful thinking, and that our thoughts determine what we attract.

Certainly for those reasons, he urged us to develop calmness of mind and dream lofty dreams, adding that a calm person is greatly admired and that dreamers are the saviors of the world.

As I read the book, I underlined quite a number of golden nuggets, so I'm at a loss which one to quote in this story. Perhaps this one will suffice:
...But to think well of all, to be cheerful with all, to patiently learn to find the good in all - such unselfish thoughts are the very portals of heaven; and to dwell day by day in thoughts of peace toward every creature will bring abounding peace to their possessor.
Short though it is, "As a Man Thinketh" is a great book that I recommend to lovers of good literature. And it's not one to be read and forgotten but one to be reread and ruminated over.
