How the SAT Shaped Me

Here's me holding one of the SAT revision books I used.

I took the SAT exam four times. First in 2006, then twice in 2007, and finally in 2009. Even though I didn't make it to America, I acquired two habits when revising for the exams.

The first was reading avidly after coming across some advice in a revision book that said "Read, Read, Read!" The second was writing often. Writing was one of the SAT sections then.

Now that I took up blogging as a profession, I still use the writing tricks I learnt from the SAT revision books I used: varying sentences, using lively words, making ideas flow, and all that.

Given how blogging has enriched my life, I'm glad I took the SAT exam four times. So Shakespeare had it right when he said, "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt."

Last Sunday, I woke up to a beautiful morning here in Kiserian and crooned a beautiful hymn as I went to switch on the lights. And yikes, there was no electricity in the house!

As time wore on and evening reached without electricity coming back, I had an inkling the power outage would persist for a day or two. So I decided not to use my smartphone to save battery power for typing a story I had planned to share the following day (Monday).

My instincts turned out to be right because come Monday, there was still no electricity at home. So I used my smartphone to type and share my blog story.

Still due to the power outage, I skipped playing the piano in the afternoon. And my parents missed watching the announcement of the presidential results, following the elections had last week.

There was still no electricity on Tuesday, for the third day running. When my father called a neighbour and asked him whether they had electricity in their home, the neighbour told him they also had no electricity since Sunday.

The neighbour went on to tell Dad that the power outage was caused by thieves who vandalized a transformer supplying our home area with electricity.

Hearing that made me hate the thieves for making me go for several days without playing the piano and checking my social media accounts. They also made my parents miss watching the announcement of the presidential results.
