I had a high school classmate called Wesley Chege who liked talking about soccer. His favorite player was Thierry Henry, a prolific Arsenal striker then. And he pointed out to me the name Thierry Henry is pronounced as "Tieri Onrii".

Thanks to Wesley and my other soccer-loving classmates, I watched my first Premier League match in November 2005 when my high school years were coming to an end. After that, I became a fan of the beautiful game.

The following year when I was pursuing an IT diploma in Starehe Institute, I watched an Africa Cup of Nations final between Egypt and Ivory Coast. I also watched several Premier League and World Cup matches.

One Premier League match stands out in my memory. Held on a Sunday night, it was between Arsenal and Man U. My institute classmate Kennedy Munene and I went to watch it, without permission.

When the match ended, we headed back to school, and lo! A number of prefects were at the school gates, taking down the names of those who had gone to watch the highly publicized match.

Kennedy went to a faulty section of the school wall where he could slip in unnoticed. Like a fool, I was left alone, waiting under the cover of darkness for the prefects to leave.

After what seemed like forever, I ran out of patience and strode into the school. Some prefects saw me but thankfully, no action was taken against me. A sinner I was.

All in all, I'm glad I became a fan of the beautiful game. For one, it helped me learn computer programming when I developed a software for the 2006 World Cup fixtures during my institute days.

Then, I got to know the world's best soccer players like Rio Ferdinand, Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Michael Ballack, Didier Drogba, Robin van Persie ... need I mention some more?

Mum's Tree of Hope

Standing majestically in our compound is a tree I've never seen anywhere else. It started fruiting about eleven years ago. And my goodness, its fruits were sweet!

Mum, who planted the tree, calls it white-supporter, a name I thought she got mixed up because it doesn't sound like that of a tree. But just to be sure she wasn't right, I googled the name - and alas! - she was right.

According to a Wikipedia article I read, white-supporters hailed from America. When I told Mum that, she joked that she went to America to get the tree. She can be that cheeky.

The article also said white-supporter fruits help prevent colon cancer, a disease that claimed the life of my neighbour Mama Marion several years ago. If only she had planted a white-supporter on her compound!

For some strange reason, our white-supporter has not been fruiting for the past five years or so, but it's still green. Maybe it's on a sabbatical, or just waiting for God's timing.
