When I Was Golden

In 1994 when I was a little boy of six, my family tasked me with the duty of delivering milk to a distant neighbor called Mrs. Mathenge. And believe you me, I had the happiest times when delivering the milk.

Among the things I did were pinwheeling dry maize plant blades I skewered on a stick. I also fancied fixing car engines, flying in airplanes, and winning fights the way I saw Shawn Michaels do on TV.

Back then, I was a big fan of the WWF wrestling show that aired on Tuesday nights. And Shawn Michaels, a charismatic fella who won his matches in style, was my favorite wrestler.

One special match he took part in is etched on my memory. I call it special because all the wrestlers I had seen only in solo matches were put together in the same ring.

As they eliminated each other from the ring, I rooted for Shawn Michaels - that I'm sure. And he stayed in the ring for quite some time, only for some remaining wrestlers to gang up and try to eliminate him.

They almost succeeded but he managed to stay in the match by hanging on a ring cord. He outwitted them, got back in the ring, and eventually won the match. How I admired Shawn Michaels!

Imagine I admired him so much that I would touch leaves along the paths I walked on when heading home from Mrs. Mathenge's house, the way he greeted his fans when heading to the wrestling ring.

That was vintage me in 1994. Unhappily, the thrill I felt then gave way to hate, guilt and worry when I became an adult. And I don't know why I allowed that to happen. This life!

In their book Glencoe Health: A Guide to Wellness, Mary and Don Merki advised teens to make lists of their qualities, skills and talents and read them often to improve their self-esteem.

That sounds to me like a wonderful idea, so here I go even though I'm no longer a teen. My qualities: polite, social, honest, daring, tactful, punctual, creative, ambitious, intelligent, prayerful, understanding, persevering and God-fearing.

And I'm striving to be bold, charming, diligent, assertive, optimistic, discerning, forgiving, self-reliant and quick-witted. I'm also striving to be an early riser, an avid reader, a team player, a clear thinker and a walking enthusiast.

As for my skills and talents, they are reading, writing, singing, playing the piano and public speaking. I've also had enough web design and computer programming skills to set up this blog, my pride and joy.
