Echoes of Mum's Love

These are my wonderful parents and I posing for a photo on Mother's Day, 2023.

While on YouTube last week, I stumbled on Owen Mac's "I believe". Listening to him sing of how he held his mother's hand as she closed her eyes reminded me of the morning last year when I also held Mum as she closed her eyes for eternal sleep.

Then this week, I stumbled on another song by Owen Mac. Titled "My Mother, My Teacher, My Friend", it has touched me so much that I had to write this story about Mum who was concerned about me.

One evening in 2001 for instance, I went home without passing by her shop as I always did when coming from school. She became so worried that she had to contact our neighbor to find out if I was at home. That was before mobile phones became commonplace.

Even as an adult, I was still her child given the way she wanted me to be paid for the good work I did to people. And she became alarmed when I was late in arriving home from my evening walk.

Being the lover of food that she was, Mum ensured we had something in the house to feast on. She would instruct our farmhands to prepare porridge and remind them when to take maize to the posho mill.

At the onset of every rainy season, she had our farmhands plant kales, beans, maize, spinach and pumpkins. It's like she wanted to make the most of our farm because when my brothers came visiting, she would ask them if it looked well tended.

Perhaps that's why she drove our farmhands to diligence. She just didn't want them to monkey around when they should have been working. And she could tell which farmhands were honest and which were light-fingered.

But she cared about their welfare, often reminding Dad about their salaries at the beginning of every month. The month after she passed away, Dad forgot about the salary of our then farmhand, a reliable fellow called Allan that Mum liked.

Mum was such an influential figure at home. Now that she's no longer there to defend me, I've grown in courage. And I like the way I'm becoming the king of my world, just as Mum was the queen of hers.

I was rather timid during my teenage years, something that made people take advantage of me. One day when I was in Form 2 for instance, a senior schoolmate asked me to go tell a girl that he wanted to talk to her. I did as he said.

Even as a young adult, I was timid. In 2013 when I was 25 for instance, anyone could exploit me even though I was bigger then than I'm now. It's like I couldn't shake off the timidity I had in childhood.

And imagine by the time I was 25, I had read the Bible, Bill Clinton's memoir and some other books you'd expect of a mature intellect. I could also play the piano and create a website. Yet look at how timid I was.

Even though I made an effort to be bold, I still found it hard to be manly. Last year for instance, I felt shy when interacting with people who came to condole with us when Mum passed away.

Then this year, I've done some things with good intentions and then caught myself worrying about what others have thought of me. Did he think I will spam him with messages for asking for his number? Indeed, old habits die hard.
