How God Came Through for Me

At Starehe Boys' Centre, I was one of the outstanding piano accompanists, especially so because I had a habit of playing a postlude. So not surprisingly, a high school mate called Emmanuel Karanja became concerned when I wasn't using my piano talent in 2009.

My brother Paddy, who also attended Starehe, also became concerned. When he asked me whether I still played the piano one day in 2009, I told him I did, which was a lie – I had no access to one. And that was the year I dropped out of JKUAT.

Come 2012, I began yearning to acquire a piano keyboard. So I asked my friend Shemaiah Mwakodi, who runs a piano school in downtown Nairobi, to give me one. While I appreciate the keyboard he gave me, it was too decrepit to be of any use to me. But then, a miracle happened.

Well, Paddy hooked me up with the wife of Mr. Seni Adetu, the then CEO of East African Breweries Limited (EABL). She wanted piano lessons for her children. I taught them for three weeks and, believe it or not, I earned enough money to buy a keyboard.

Having acquired what I longed for, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction as I travelled home with the keyboard. That was God fulfilling my heart's desire and I can't help but trust Him more now.

A Farmhand Mum Liked

This is Wambugu.

When Wambugu came to work for us in 2018 (or was it 2019?), I heard him tell Mum he was once in an alcohol rehab where he learnt to cook chapatis. And he cooked some nice chapatis for us. I must have assumed he was now on the wagon.

But alas! One afternoon not long afterwards, Dad found him drunk by the roadside. He carried him back home, with someone's help of course. When he sobered up, he asked where his phone was. It was Dad who had taken it.

Wambugu kept punctuating his life with heavy drinking. Mum liked him nonetheless, perhaps more so because she enjoyed listening to him when alcohol loosened his tongue. But he eventually left home.

A few years later when my family was looking for a farmhand, Mum wanted Wambugu to be rehired. And we could do with him if he got drunk since we would have two farmhands if he came back. He came back.

Though he still drank, Mum couldn't stop liking him. One evening when I told him to budget his money, she rebuked me. And I think it was when he was rehired that I heard her tell someone it was not in Wambugu's nature to steal.

Once when Dad went to Wambugu's room, he saw two books. The books were Alan Moorehead's No Room in the Ark and a Bible. So Wambugu had a desire to grow spiritually.

Unhappily, he left home again. But Mum kept in touch with him, sometimes teasing him about his drinking. When she passed away last year, he came for her funeral.

I got in touch with Wambugu several months ago. And when I asked him to forgive me if I did him any wrong, he just said we will walk this journey called life together. We will.
