"Age-Proof Your Brain"

I bought "Age-Proof Your Brain" in 2007 when I was an engineering student at JKUAT. But it was not until 2017 that I read it to the end.

Quite readable, the book taught me that our brains have limitless memory and can remain agile as we age. Artists like Goethe produced their greatest works after the age of 70.

I learnt eleven ways of making our brains remain agile. And they are not rocket science. Let me tell you what they are.

First is learning, a process that becomes easier with practice and one that makes us happier, more confident and more adventurous.

Second is listening to music which, as the book said, makes children develop a higher IQ when given lessons on it than on drama or computer.

Third is daydreaming which, as the book said, tones our brains since it allows our imagination to take over and flex its creative muscles.

Fourth is memorizing short poems which gives exercise to our minds and pleasure to our thinking.

Fifth is revisiting old memories which improves our ability to recall information and events.

Sixth is increasing our word power which has been associated with success as people who harness the power of language wield influence and inspire others.

Seventh is doing physical exercises as that keeps our minds strong and fit and makes us feel happier, more optimistic and more confident.

Eighth is eating well and drinking plenty of water as diet plays a key part in brain fitness and improving mental health.

Ninth is having a sunny disposition as it is likely to protect our brains against the ill-effects of ageing.

Tenth is writing prose or poetry, a fantastic way of getting our mental juices flowing, especially if we do it with humor.

Last but not least is having a good night's sleep as it is essential for improving memory, focus and learning.

As I conclude, it's important I say that the book mentions the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, anger and sloth.
