A Book That Changed Me

This is me holding Glencoe Health: A Guide to Wellness.

Mary Bronson Merki's "Glencoe Health: A Guide to Wellness" is an enlightening book. I especially loved reading what it said about self-esteem since that's one of the topics that spark my interest.

Self-esteem, the book said, is knowing, liking and accepting not what we have, whom we know or what we do, but who we are. So personal qualities matter more than looks and wealth.

People with good self-esteem recognize their value as human beings, take pleasure in everyday things, don't overestimate or underestimate their abilities, and don't consider themselves more or less important than others.

Those with low self-esteem may engage in people-pleasing behaviors, get their identity from external rather than internal sources, trust others' reactions more than their own and waste time defending themselves.

Happily, the book listed steps we can take to improve self-esteem. The steps sounded good to me but the ones I liked best were:
  • Find something that you can enjoy doing and that gives you a feeling of success. Make time to do that activity regularly.
  • Aim for improvement, not perfection.
  • Build a network of supportive relationships.
  • Accept mistakes and errors as learning tools rather than as signs of your failure.
  • Reject any negative feedback from others that is intended to put you down.
  • Whenever you look at your weaknesses, spend equal time considering your strengths.
  • Give yourself credit for all accomplishments or improvements, even the smallest ones.
  • Practice basic health habits, giving attention to your physical, mental and social health.
  • Improve your mind - read a book, write a story.
Taking those steps has improved my self-esteem. As a result, I now enjoy my own company and relate with others well. I have also developed a strong sense of who I am and what I stand for.

A Shaggy-Dog Story With Wisdom

Picture related to the title of the story
With permission, I have extracted this picture-quote from King of Kings Ministries. All rights reserved worldwide.

One Sunday in January 2007 when I was a student at Starehe Institute, I heard a priest tell a shaggy-dog story. It was about a travelling experience he had.

The following week, I modified the story and used it to wind up a series of three talks I gave at Starehe during evening assemblies. Here is my version of the story I told:
Last December when coming back from Grandma's, I boarded a matatu bound for Nairobi. As it followed the road, a restless lad kept asking, "Have we reached Thika?"

When one urbane man could no longer take his question, he instructed him, "Young man, relax! We will tell you when we reach Thika."

We then drove on with the lad seated quietly, the man next to me dozing lazily, and two lovebirds behind us chatting charmingly.

I didn't know where Thika is, but it reached a time when I realized we were there, what with signs like "Thika Branch" and "Thika Post Office". But I didn't say anything.

So we drove on till one passenger in the front asked, "Did the lad who wanted to alight in Thika do so?"

On hearing we had passed Thika, the lad started crying. We then turned back, apart from one impatient man who got out.

After 20 minutes or so, we reached Thika. But when the tout opened the door, the lad just opened a bag he had, took out two chapatis and began eating them.

When the tout asked him why he wasn't getting out, he shot back, "No, Mum told me to eat two chapatis when I reach Thika."
That shaggy-dog story had Starehians convulsing with laughter that evening I told it. Teachers in the hall also laughed. I was the man of the moment.

Years later, I realized the story carried the wisdom of not following instructions blindly, a blunder I made down the line. I for instance gave out money to obey God's command to be generous.

But you see, I hadn't earned the money I gave out, a big blunder because we should be generous with the fruits of our labor, not the donations we have received.

Bible Quote

"Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice! Let everyone see that you are unselfish and considerate in all you do... Don't worry about anything; instead pray about everything; tell God your needs and don't forget to thank Him for His answers. If you do this, you will experience God's peace, which is far more wonderful than the human mind can understand."
