The Power of Biblical Stories

It was around 1996 that I probably first heard about the biblical story of God calling Samuel. Let me give a quick recap before saying something about it.

As the story goes, Samuel heard a voice calling him and thought it was Eli doing so. But when he went to him, Eli told him he hadn't called him.

The second time he heard the voice and again thought it was Eli, Eli realized it was God calling Samuel, so he told him to let Him speak when he heard the voice again.

Samuel did hear the voice for the third time, and as instructed by Eli, he replied, "Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening." And God spoke.

That story had such a strong impression on me when I heard about it around 1996 that a voice called out my name here at home. Whether it was real or imagined, I'm still unsure.

But I initially thought it was real because I went to where Uncle Ndonga was, and when he told me he hadn't called me, I thought it was God speaking to me. Such is the power of biblical stories.

Starehe Barazas: A Tapestry of Memories

This was Dr. Griffin leaving the assembly hall after a Starehe baraza.

One of the best high schools in Kenya, Starehe Boys' Centre holds weekly barazas during which students and staff share their ideas and concerns.

In my time, I enjoyed listening to some students speak during barazas, like one called Kevin Ogutu who got a kick out of using high-flown language.

I also enjoyed listening to Dr. Griffin, the school founding director. He always spoke first, telling us a story from his past before saying, "Now, baraza is open."

Oh, school leavers also gave their farewell speeches during barazas. To be honest though, the only farewell speech I remember is Luyo Likoko's in 2002.

Three years my senior, Luyo began his speech by saying something along these lines: "As my Starehe years come to an end, I'd like to thank one person..."

Then he turned around to look at Dr. Griffin, making us think he was about to thank the iconic director, only for him to face the mic and say, "And that's myself!"

That comment had us roaring with laughter. Even Dr. Griffin was amused. Actually, I don't remember anything else Luyo said in his speech that day.

At the end of each baraza, the school band was always on hand to accompany us as we sang a hymn. Two hymns actually, if my memory serves me well.

And which Starehian of my time can forget the final barazas of each term when Dr. Griffin conducted as we sang "Forty Years On", a wonderful song that said:
God gives us duty for us to discharge it,
Problems to face, struggle with and overcome;
Service to render and glory to covet,
Twenty and thirty, and forty years on!
