Ever since I was in high school, I've always wanted to touch people with stories. It all began in 2003 when I read Ngugi's The River Between and felt so moved that I wrote a story, hoping to touch my deskmate, Martin Wamoni.

Writing compelling stories, I now realize, isn't as easy as I thought back then. That's why I'm glad I took the SAT exam several years later, when Writing was one of the exam sections.

Though I didn't make it to America, I learnt several tips on writing well when revising for the SAT exam, like how to vary sentences, use lively words and make ideas flow.

As I wrote more and more, I learnt writing well also takes practice and becomes more exciting when we have an audience. How delighted I'm that I had the skills to set up this blog!

Well, trying to build an audience can be challenging, what with the criticism and rejection writers face as they hone their craft. As for me, such challenges have made me wiser.

It has now reached a time when I feel like a striker who has burst through the defenders and the goalkeeper, and is running, unobstructed, to score. I see great days ahead, touching people with the stories I share on this blog.

Challenged to Be Better

Yesterday morning, I picked up A Second Chicken Soup for the Woman's Soul and began re-reading a story I liked. Written by Gail Rosenblum, it's titled "A Final Letter to a Father".

The story riveted me until Rosenblum said, "Yours were funny, newsy missives pounded out regularly on your clinker of a typewriter. Movies to see and to avoid..."

That last sentence sent icy currents of guilt down my spine, making me unable to continue savoring the story. In fact, I went back to bed.

Why did I feel guilty, you ask? Well, hearing Rosenblum say her father advised her which movies to avoid had me thinking about this blog I've been running for nine years now.

Much as I've tried sharing truthful stories, I've realized most of the past ones were subpar when going through them this year. Verbosity, incorrect punctuation, poor word choice, and some other hallmarks of bad writing.

And the thought of parents advising their children to avoid my blog was what sent icy currents of guilt down my spine when I heard Rosenblum say her father advised her which movies to avoid.

But hey! I've been polishing my past blog stories that had good ideas and removed those that were out of whack when I looked at them from a Christian perspective.

Now that I've become a better blogger, I'm thinking wise parents will advise their children to visit my blog. That makes me feel good and challenges me to keep getting better.
